The dangers of digital networking

Modern integrated automation solutions simplify operations and make processes more flexible and efficient. However, increasing connectivity has also brought cybersecurity into sharper focus for process automation professionals.One statistic highlights the scale of the challenge: According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Report, cybercrime cost U.S. organizations and individuals nearly $21 billion in reported losses in 2025. As cyber threats continue to grow in both frequency and sophistication, industrial organizations are increasingly focused on protecting critical systems and infrastructure.Cyber criminals can take many forms, ranging from individual “script kiddies” to organized criminal groups and even nation-state actors. While cyberattacks remain relatively uncommon in the process industries, operators of power plants, fuel storage facilities, and water infrastructure have recently become much more aware of the risks. The advantages of wireless communication

Despite these challenges, increased connectivity offers substantial benefits. Level sensors provide critical data across a wide range of industrial applications, making process information available wherever it is needed and enabling capabilities such as Vendor Managed Inventory (VMI).

For many years, VEGA sensors have supplied critical information to higher-level management systems. Examples include level data from highway road salt silos and production data from flour mills, helping optimize raw material logistics. As a result, transportation departments and milling operations can rely on storage facilities being replenished automatically with road salt or grain when needed. In fact, VEGA began enabling these types of connected applications long before Industry 4.0 became a widely discussed concept.

The addition of Bluetooth communication has further expanded these capabilities. Bluetooth simplifies sensor setup and commissioning while reducing the need for personnel to access difficult or potentially hazardous locations.

Whether level data comes from tall storage silos, remote stormwater overflow basins, hazardous areas, or complex industrial facilities, VEGA sensors make that information accessible wherever it is needed. Wireless communication is also used to retrieve diagnostic information, report maintenance needs, and deliver software updates. This helps reduce downtime and improve operational efficiency.

At the same time, cybersecurity challenges increase as more data is integrated into production and maintenance systems for use in control rooms and business offices. These connections can create new intersections between operational systems and cybersecurity requirements.

A comprehensive security concept for VEGAPULS 6X

To address these challenges, VEGA placed a strong emphasis on IEC 62443-4-2 compliance during the development of its flagship radar level sensor, VEGAPULS 6X.

This internationally recognized series of standards provides a flexible framework for assessing, implementing, and maintaining cybersecurity measures in industrial environments. It defines security requirements for both hardware and software and applies to equipment manufacturers, system integrators, and plant operators alike.

As a result, the entire development process for VEGAPULS 6X was aligned with IEC 62443-4-2 requirements. This included a comprehensive threat analysis early in development to identify vulnerabilities and implement countermeasures before the product reached the market.

Security considerations extended beyond the device itself to the broader industrial environment in which it operates. The development process and security measures were independently evaluated and verified by TÜV Nord, a major global technical service and certification provider based in Hanover, Germany.

Protection begins with the encapsulated electronics of VEGAPULS 6X, which help prevent tampering. The sensor also incorporates a Defense-in-Depth approach, a layered security strategy that combines multiple levels of protection across equipment, networks, and system components.

This approach helps protect against threats including:

  • Data manipulation (compromise of integrity)
  • Denial-of-Service (DoS) attacks (compromise of availability)
  • Espionage and unauthorized data access (compromise of confidentiality)

VEGAPULS 6X also includes several additional security features:

User Authentication
Every VEGAPULS 6X is supplied with a unique device code and Bluetooth access code. Bluetooth communication is encrypted using standardized cryptographic methods, and Bluetooth access can be disabled after configuration if desired.

Event Logging
VEGAPULS 6X records lock and unlock events, including both successful and unsuccessful access attempts. Users can verify this functionality by attempting to unlock the device with an incorrect code. Failed authentication attempts are recorded in the “IT Security” event log, allowing operators to identify potential attacks or tampering through regular review.

Firmware Integrity Verification
Software update packages are encrypted and digitally signed, preventing unauthorized software from being installed on the device.

Data Backup and Recovery

Using DTM software, users can save VEGAPULS 6X parameters through the “Create Backup” function. HART-enabled control systems also provide options for backing up device configuration settings.

Preparing for worst-case scenarios?

When responding to a cyberattack, time is critical. Every organization should have a clearly defined incident response plan in place to minimize delays and ensure an effective response if an attack occurs.

This planning should also include procedures for restoring secure operations if significant damage is sustained.

VEGA supports customers through its Product Security Incident Response Team (PSIRT). These specialists continuously monitor for vulnerabilities, support software updates and security patches, answer customer questions, and respond quickly when security concerns arise. For example, if a customer identifies a potential vulnerability, the PSIRT team is prepared to investigate and act immediately.

In addition, VEGA works closely with CERT@VDE, an industrial cybersecurity organization focused on reporting, assessing, and addressing security vulnerabilities.
