McLanahan Sampling Systems in the Field

Equipment Spotlight: Mechanical Sampling Systems
Mechanical Sampling Systems (MSS) are engineered to collect representative samples from bulk material streams, ensuring accurate evaluation of material quality. These automated systems remove the variability of manual sampling and provide consistent, repeatable increments that reflect true process conditions.

Representative Sampling for Bulk Materials
Mechanical Sampling Systems are designed to extract samples from various points in a material handling process. By automating the collection of material, these systems help producers verify product specifications, maintain quality control and meet contractual requirements.

Primary Types of Mechanical Sampling Systems

Cross Belt Samplers

Cross Belt Samplers collect samples from a moving conveyor belt by sweeping a cutter through the full crosssection of the material stream. This method closely replicates stoppedbelt sampling while allowing the conveyor to remain in operation.McLanahan Sampling SystemsFalling Stream Samplers
Falling Stream Samplers intercept material as it transitions off a conveyor or through a freefall trajectory. These systems capture increments from the full stream and are commonly used where material is already moving vertically.McLanahan Sampling SystemsAuger Sampling Systems
Auger Samplers extract material from stationary locations such as trucks, railcars or stockpiles. A rotating auger draws material upward and delivers it for processing, making this method suitable when sampling from a flowing stream is not possible.McLanahan Sampling SystemsSample Processing and Reduction

Sampling Crushers
To prepare collected increments for laboratory testing, Mechanical Sampling Systems may incorporate crushers that reduce the sample to a manageable size. These machines operate similarly to fullscale crushers but are designed specifically for lowtonnage sample reduction.

McLanahan Sampling SystemsSystem Configurations
Mechanical Sampling Systems can be arranged in singlestage or multistage configurations depending on sampling requirements.

  • OneStage Systems use a primary sampler to collect increments.
  • TwoStage Systems include both a primary and secondary sampler for further division.
  • MultiStage Systems combine samplers and crushers to progressively reduce sample size while maintaining integrity.

These configurations help ensure that the final sample delivered to the laboratory is both representative and appropriately sized for analysis.

McLanahan Sampling Systems in the Field
At Koenig Materials in Oxford, Michigan, Cross Belt Samplers have become a key component of their qualitycontrol process. When designing the plant, Koenig Materials included nine Cross Belt Samplers to help ensure they are producing Koenig’s primary 2NS product, secondary mason sand and tertiary Class 2 sand product at spec. These sampling systems have helped improve sample accuracy and consistency while collecting a more representative sample.

By automating the collection of increments, the samplers reduce personnel time, effort and energy, while producing composite samples that reflect a full period of production rather than the momentintime snapshots manual methods provide. This broader view of material quality helps ensure more reliable evaluation and supports stronger process control.

“I’m kind of obsessed with them,” Rob Wilson, President of Koenig Materials, said about the Cross Belt Samplers. “I find that they help us get a more representative sample.”

“I believe it allows us to have a leg up on our competition by having those [Cross Belt Samplers],” shared Wilson.

Mechanical Sampling Systems provide a structured, repeatable method for collecting increments from bulk material streams. By automating the sampling process, these systems improve safety, reduce labor demands and deliver reliable samples that support accurate evaluation of material quality.
