HEIDELBERG Materials UK have demonstrated a zero concrete waste process at their Greenwich plant in London using a new concrete waste recycling system.
The system recovers aggregates and cementitious fines from returned concrete for reuse in new material production, while all water used to clean concrete trucks is also recycled back into the process.
The Greenwich site, based at Victoria Deep Water on the River Thames, is being developed as a circular construction materials hub and also supplies a range of lower-carbon concrete options.
These include Heidelberg Materials’ evoZero carbon captured near-zero cement, evoBuild GGBS, limestone fines, natural pozzolans and calcined clay. The plant can also supply recycled crushed concrete aggregate (CCA) as a replacement for primary aggregate in ready-mixed concrete.
The site is also equipped with CarbonCure technology, which Heidelberg Materials say can reduce the CO₂ associated with concrete by around 7–11kg/m³.
The process injects manufactured CO₂ into fresh concrete, where it reacts and becomes permanently mineralized. Heidelberg Materials say this can improve hydration efficiency and allow average cement content to be reduced by around 5%.
Daniel Clayton, concrete technical director at Heidelberg Materials UK, said: ‘Our Greenwich concrete plant is a great example of our commitment to investing in innovation and decarbonising our business so that we can provide our customers with lower carbon construction materials that support the circular economy.
‘The location of our concrete lab and evoHub training centre on site makes it an ideal place for customers to visit to learn about the lower carbon concrete solutions we offer and discuss opportunities for collaborating to develop more in the future.’
The Greenwich plant is also home to Heidelberg Materials’ evoHub concrete training centre and concrete laboratory, where contractors, consultants and engineers can see lower-carbon concrete solutions in practice.
