Indianapolis — Some highway workers in Indiana will be equipped with wearable devices featuring green flashing lights via a new safety program launched by the state’s Department of Transportation.
Under INDOT’s Project Greenlight, aimed at improving roadway worker safety when visibility is limited, 375 Guardian Angel safety lights will be distributed to workers around the state. The device displays a flashing pattern that, when worn with a high-visibility vest, makes workers 89% more visible to drivers, states an INDOT press release citing research from the Battelle Memorial Institute.
INDOT says bright green is easily distinguishable from standard work zone lighting colors and most visible to the human eye from long distances.
The lights were piloted in fall 2025 in three areas patrolled by INDOT’s Hoosier Helper safety service workers and with highway maintenance crews throughout the state.
Workers are encouraged to use the lights during nighttime operations and inclement weather conditions that can limit visibility, including fog, rain and snow.
“Studies show drivers are more likely to move over and slow down when they see these green lights in work zones,” INDOT Commissioner Lyndsay Quist said in the release. “The safety of our team is always our top priority as they make improvements to Indiana’s infrastructure, and we hope this small tool will have a big impact.”
