Strata Partners with Aura IQ Technology to Monitor and Measure Wear of Conveyor Rollers

Conveyor belts in mining and construction operate in harsh and demanding conditions and the biggest maintenance requirement is detecting and replacing worn rollers. Damaged rollers can be a major source of belt problems and fire hazards which can result in equipment damage and significant productivity down time.

Traditionally, personnel walk the belt to visually and audibly check the health of the conveyors, but these methods tend to be laborious, time-consuming and sometimes unreliable.

Aura IQ transforms this process by using fiber optic cable and revolutionary photonic sensing technology to continually monitor and measure the health of the conveyor rollers and proactively detect any potential breakdowns or wear and tear.
The system predicts which components will need repair before they break down, not only preventing damage and downtime, but facilitating the scheduling of repairs and maintenance.

Aura IQ monitors, diagnoses, tracks and reports on the progressive state of wear of conveyor rollers. The data is gathered from every roller linestand on the conveyor and is processed into real time reports on the entire belt, roller-by-roller and bearing-by-bearing. The system alerts operators in operational hubs or control rooms to potential failures before they happen.

Roller wear can be the root cause of issues such as belt slippage, mis-tracking, splice strain, and motor/pulley overload conditions. Failures cause significant delays for an operation while maintenance workers seek out the location of the problem and work to repair it. With the Aura IQ system’s predictive maintenance capability, mine operators can see which sections of the belt need attention and plan downtime for repair or replacement before parts fail. Aura IQ can be used on conveyors both above and below ground.

In addition to safeguarding equipment, Aura IQ also protects the health and safety of workers by alleviating the need to physically walk miles of belt line to monitor its condition.

Research on the Aura IQ technology began in 2016, and the system became available for commercial application in late 2019. In May 2021, Strata Worldwide signed a Premium Partnership Agreement with Future Fibre Technologies to distribute the company’s FFT Aura IQ™ Conveyor Health Monitoring System globally.
