by Jon M. Casey When Inland Aggregates Limited was in the planning stages of their greenfield Pine Ridge Aggregates Operation near Winnipeg, they contacted Rohr Corp.’s Chris Nelson for his expertise to help them design a dredging system that would meet their needs. With Inland project manager James Kaskiw leading the way, Rohr’s design staff created the right tool for the job when they installed Inland’s $4.4 million GT-1000 16-yard Gantry Dredge, currently in operation at the Pine Ridge facility. | Lehigh Inland Region Canada company’s new $4.4 million ROHR GT-1000 16-yard clamshell bucket dredge is in full operation. |
“We worked closely with Inland’s management staff to assemble the right combination of equipment and technology as we decided on how to outfit their new GT-1000 Gantry Dredge,” said Nelson during a recent interview. “Rohr Corp. has the flexibility to design exactly what the customer needs.” The reason Rohr is able to be so creative is because of the company’s long heritage of listening to what customers are looking for in the way of production, reliability and service. “Our record of success goes all the way back to the late 1970s when Wolfgang Rohr began making custom equipment for his family’s German sand and gravel operation. His first invention was what he called an ‘Aquamator,’” said Nelson. “That was a washing system that removed deleterious materials from sand and gravel. By using the Aquamator, Rohr’s family was able to produce a much cleaner product for their customers.” Nelson said that the Rohr Corp. has a long history in the U.S. market beginning with Wolfgang’s son, Jochen Rohr, who moved to the U.S. to start selling Rohr equipment. That was in 1985. It was Jochen’s dream to expand the family’s dredging sales throughout North America. Today, Rohr’s vision is coming to fruition, with Jochen Rohr buying the German parent company, Rohr Bagger GmbH, and becoming president of both the German and U.S. companies. “Our U.S. headquarters is in Cleves, Ohio, a suburb of Cincinnati,” said Nelson. “We have another office in the San Francisco area. We manufacture most of our dredges here in our Cincinnati facility. “When it came to designing and building a dredge for the Inland Pine Ridge facility, we looked at the requirements laid out by Inland’s design team,” said Nelson. “They already had extensive experience with clamshell dredging so this was an easy transition. Their site is perfect for deep clamshell dredging. Since they were building a new plant from the ground up, we are able to provide the precise feed necessary to maximize efficiency in their processing.” According to Nelson, “Being involved in this project for Inland was a great experience for all of us at Rohr. From Management, Engineering to the plant operations, Inland is an extremely professional organization. We look forward to working with them again in the future.” To comment on this story or for additional details click on the related button above. |
