Hanson provides 2,024 ft. of concrete rail crossings
DALLAS, TEXAS — Hanson Pipe & Precast, a leader in the concrete products industry, is providing more than 2,025 track feet of its Premier Modular Rail Crossings for an estimated $500 million project to build a rail car manufacturing facility located in the Muscle Shoals region of northwest Alabama.
National Alabama Corp., a subsidiary of National Industries, Inc, is building the facility. National Industries is the parent company of National Steel Car Limited (NSC), the leading North American rail car manufacturer.
Railworks subcontracted under Yates/Walbridge construction under contract to National Industries Inc., selected Hanson Pipe & Precast to provide its Premier® Railroad Grade Crossings for National Alabama Corporation, whose building and site total more than 640 acres with seven miles of track laid around the premises. Hanson’s Premier crossings, made of 7,000 psi corrosion resistant concrete, are produced in an efficient and controlled facility offering a higher quality product and safer and faster installation.
“This was a prestigious undertaking by National Alabama Corp., who sought out the optimum North American site, design, plant configuration and products for their new facility,” said Richard Manning, president of Hanson Building Products North America. “It is rewarding for Hanson to be selected among high competition and to have the opportunity to work with these professionals.”
Hanson Pipe & Precast is manufacturing its Premier Modular railroad Crossings in four facilities — Pottstown, PA, Chesapeake, VA, Dunn, NC and Pelham, AL — in order to meet stringent schedule requirements for construction. “We utilized our resources across the east coast to work efficiently and quickly to meet time constraints while managing costs,” said Bob Christensen, senior vice president of Hanson Building Products East.
The National Alabama Corp. facility involves more than 800 construction workers and will employ 1,850 people when complete in early 2009. The additional facility will increase National’s product offerings in North America.
