More than 300 people attended the 2019 Young Leaders Annual Meeting in Hilton Head, S.C., this week.
The three-day program featured CEOs of aggregates companies and special guests who imparted life lessons and leadership advice to the largest group of Young Leaders ever to attend the meeting.
“It’s remarkable that we’re here in Hilton Head because this is where it all started [for the group] 27 years ago,” said Aaron Ozinga, president of Ozinga Materials and Logistics and chairman of the Young Leaders Steering Committee. “The growth of this group since then, which started as a handful of people, is really something incredible.”
Ozinga encouraged the attendees to think about their legacy. As construction materials producers, or equipment manufacturers and service providers, everyone in the industry contributes to infrastructure projects that benefit communities and commuters today and in the future.
NSSGA’s Young Leaders is a group of industry professionals 40 years old and younger. Education sessions and networking at the Annual Meeting help to develop leadership and management skills, address industry positions, build a national network of industry professionals, exchange ideas and discuss areas of mutual interest that help them and their companies become more successful in the aggregates industry.
Speakers from the aggregates industry included: Bob Weldon, president of Weldon Materials, Inc.; Micah Zeltwanger, CEO of Superior Industries; Dan Grant, senior vice president of strategy and development at Martin Marietta; Dana Guzzo, senior vice president of sustainability, community relations and communications at Martin Marietta; Michele Stanley, NSSGA vice president of government affairs; Ted Baker, CEO of Blue Water Industries; Brian Mahavier, vice president of business development at U.S. Concrete; Tom Hill, CEO of Summit Materials; Seth Hankowski, vice president of sales and supply at All States Materials Group; and Rick Everist, Midwest division vice president at L.G. Everist, Inc.
The meeting also featured a leadership workshop led by former U.S. Navy SEAL Mike Sarraille and a community service project where attendees compiled care packages for military families.
As previously reported, the Mark S. Walsh Annual Leadership Award was presented to Mahavier in recognition of his dedication and service to the group and steering committee. The award is annually sponsored by Rock Products. Also, Ozinga welcomed Everist as the 2020 chairman of the group.
